A coupled biophysical model for the distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel ArchiMer

In this paper we used a modelling approach integrating both physical and biological constraints to understand the biogeographical distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel during its whole life cycle. A 3D bio-hydrodynamical model (ECO-MARS3D) providing environmental conditions was coupled to (i) a population dynamics model and (ii) an individual ecophysiological model (Dynamic Energy Budget model). We performed the coupling sequentially, which underlined the respective role of biological and physical factors in defining P. maximus distribution in the English Channel. Biological data extraction from imagery - How far can we go? A case study from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer

In the past few decades, hydrothermal vent research has progressed immensely, resulting in higher-quality samples and long-term studies. With time, scientists are becoming more aware of the impacts of sampling on the faunal communities and are looking for less invasive ways to investigate the vent ecosystems. In this perspective, imagery analysis plays a very important role. With this study, we test which factors can be quantitatively and accurately assessed based on imagery, through comparison with faunal sampling. Twelve instrumented chains were deployed on the Atlantic Eiffel Tower hydrothermal edifice and the corresponding study sites were subsequently sampled. Deciphering the molecular adaptation of the king scallop (Pecten maximus) to heat stress using transcriptomics and proteomics ArchiMer

Background: The capacity of marine species to survive chronic heat stress underpins their ability to survive warming oceans as a result of climate change. In this study RNA-Seq and 2-DE proteomics were employed to decipher the molecular response of the sub-tidal bivalve Pecten maximus, to elevated temperatures. Results: Individuals were maintained at three different temperatures (15, 21 and 25 degrees C) for 56 days, representing control conditions, maximum environmental temperature and extreme warming, with individuals sampled at seven time points. Deep sequencing of the mantle transcriptome of the great scallop Pecten maximus ArchiMer

RNA-Seq transcriptome data were generated from mantle tissue of the great scallop, Pecten maximus. The consensus data were produced from a time course series of animals subjected to a 56-day thermal challenge at 3 different temperatures. A total of 26,064 contigs were assembled de novo, providing a useful resource for both the aquaculture community and researchers with an interest in mollusc shell production.

Feeding and energetics of the great scallop, Pecten maximus, through a DEB model ArchiMer

We developed a full life-cycle bioenergetic model for the great scallop P. maximusrelying on the concepts of the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory. The covariation method was implemented to estimate the parameters of a standard DEB model. Such models are able to predict various metabolic processes from a food availability marker and temperature in the environment. However, suspension-feeders are likely to feed on various trophic sources, from microalgae cells to detritus. They are also able to sort and select food particles very efficiently, depending on their size, energetic value or quality. Like many marine species around the globe, several stocks of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) live in increasingly hypoxic waters. In the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (GSL) in Canada, the deep channels traversing the semi-enclosed sea exhibit year-round hypoxia, identified as one of the limiting factor for the recovery of GSL cod in its northern part. We combined the use of pigments, fatty acids and sterols as biomarkers of the seasonal variation in food sources of the great scallop Pecten maximus. From March to October 2011, on a biweekly to twice-weekly basis, scallops and seawater from the water column and the water-sediment interface were collected in the Bay of Brest (Brittany, France). Pigment compositions in the seawater and in the stomach and rectum content of the scallops were analyzed by HPLC.
